The East Oakland CIRCLe Lab –
Bringing Real‐Life STEM into Neighborhoods
The David E. Glover Education and Technology Center and the YMCA of the East Bay have entered a working relationship to establish the East Oakland CIRCLe Lab, an initiative of the Institute for STEM Education at California State University, East Bay.
STEM industries are leading California’s economic growth and STEM education resources abound in the Bay Area. Yet, these resources are often poorly connected and not located in low‐income urban communities - inaccessible to the students and residents who could benefit from them the most. CIRCLe Labs aim to change all that.
Economically and creatively, CIRCLe Labs will draw on existing and ever‐growing networks of STEM professionals and experts throughout the Bay Area and bring well‐planned, ongoing STEM learning opportunities and career awareness into low‐income neighborhoods. The goals are to excite students and residents about STEM, break down assumptions about the kinds of employees STEM companies are looking for, and offer crucial support as students and residents pursue STEM studies and careers.
The Glover Center and the YMCA Center for Opportunity and Advancement [both located along Foothill Boulevard in East Oakland] currently offer STEM-related and technology programs to East Oakland students and residents. As CIRCLe Labs, each location will be equipped with state-of-the-art videoconferencing systems, in order to expand their current programs by connecting Oakland program participants in real time to a wide range of training and learning opportunities led by top technology professionals, educators and innovators from places throughout the world. The CIRCLe Lab is funded with major support from Bayer Corporation, Wareham Development and various foundations. CIRCLe Lab programming will begin in January 2017. A CIRCLe Lab Open House and Launch will be held at each location on December 12, 2016.
The David E. Glover Education and Technology Center is a comprehensive technology education, multimedia access and workforce development program for low and moderate income youth and adults living with the challenges of the digital divide in East Oakland.
The Center offers courses in basic personal computer hardware and software use [e.g. Microsoft, Excel and PowerPoint] for adults in both English and Spanish. Middle and high school youth learn computer coding, virtual reality applications, and game design, as well as apps for mobile and web platforms.
DEGETC collaborates with a group of organizations and professionals who specialize in various aspects of technology and STEM-related education and training, including:
Through these and other partnerships The Glover Center is at the center of an emerging network of high-impact STEM and technology programs offered in East Oakland [the East Oakland Technology Corridor] that is developing a large, culturally diverse pipeline of talent that will help to close the persistent gaps in the Bay Area technology and STEM sectors.
The Institute’s primary goal is to increase the impact of all the Bay Area’s expertise and dedication to STEM education by serving as a “backbone institution” that leverages existing strengths, reduce costs, and build new collaborations.
